What is SOYA ?

Somali youth alliance

Is a non-profit, non-governmental organization headquartered in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia., Soya is a youth composed organization from all segments of the society. It was established on January 2007 by a group of young Somali intellectuals who have come to realize the importance to unite all Somali youth and also the need to mobilize those youth groups to development opportunities. SOYA is an organization that seeks to empower young people (ages 15 – 30) through formal and informal education interventions in all levels of development. SOYA is committed to conduct an awareness raising on HIV/AIDS pandemic through comprehensive awareness and knowledge sharing, advocacy training, capacity-building and youth involvement at local, regional and international conferences. SOYA addresses the need of creating a bridge for continued empowerment, networking opportunities and collaboration among youth activists and youth organizations in uplifting their education levels and also fighting on HIV/AIDS spread.

9. Who is involved?

SOYA is currently made up of a number of youth groups and adult allies in Benadir and  Mudug Region representing the wider communities living in  Mudug areas including Galkayco and Mogadishu.  Our Board members consist of five members; Board chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Diaspora community Mobilizer. The Management staff SOYA is comprised of 10 active members, all of which are young dynamic people. We have a coordinator, Deputy Coordinator, Accountant, an executive secretary, and 6 Officers representiong various sections namely; Education Officer,                 and representatives from Galkacyo, Mogadishu, Hobyo, Wisil, Bandiredley, Ceelgula, Galinsor, Budbud. (All areas living by the communities)

Our main focus area is for the young people to help them mobilize from darkness and ignorance in education starting from the primary level up to university levels, and also sponsor them higher education in overseas through raising funds locally and from the Diaspora communities. SOYA intends to conduct an awareness raising against the HIV-AIDS pandemic.   

10. How is SOYA unique from other youth organizations?

Although many youth-led organizations already exist, discussions at forum for youth in Mogadishu and Galkacyo towns revealed the formation of this kind of association whereby the need for SOYA arose from those youth groups who supported by the idea and stood to support their societies in all aspects of social development.

SOYA is also a tool for youth who are participants in the fight against HIV/AIDS. SOYA is trying its best to engage and empower young people by adapting tools that have proven successful for previous initiatives, and initiate them to start with a youth-created and youth-led plan of action. Such practices to start in the coming future include; help the poor youth to get access of good education, to reach far remote areas in  mudug to support them establish schools, Madrasas, adult learning, free capacity building, e-courses; local networking sessions among youths; mapping and facilitation of other already existed youth organization in the Galkacyo and Mogadishu. Our association is open to join all Somali youth living inside and outside of the country and it is free of charge to be part of the association.
